Lake Langano

Lake Langano is one of a series of crater lakes about 3 hours south of Addis Ababa. It is one of the most popular spots for people looking for a weekend getaway.

Lake Langano is such a popular vacation spot because it is free from the inhospitable pollutants that the rest of Ethiopia’s lakes are burdened with: Bilharzia from parasitic flatworms. This makes Lake Langano the only freshwater lake in Ethiopia that is safe for humans to swim in.

At first glance, the lake seems muddy, with a brownish color. This is due to the number of beneficial minerals in the water, like sulfur. Campers, bathers, hikers, and bird and wildlife enthusiasts are all encouraged to visit the lake as it offers something for travellers of all interests.

The wildlife and birds present at the lake are notable enough to make this alone worth visiting the region. In the neighboring Kimthe Bishangari forest, there are over 400 species of bird, some of which are only found in this location. Travellers might also spot warthogs, baboons, monkeys, and even hippos.
